Public Health Nurse – Childcare Nurse Consultant

Black Hawk County is seeking a Public Health Nurse to provide health industry expertise and resources to
guide childcare providers to make evidence-based decisions about the health and safety of children and
participates in community outreach through consultation visits.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provides ongoing advice and consultation to the Child Care Health Consultation team about proper
procedures, problem solving, and child safety from a health care professional perspective.
• Provides technical support to childcare programs; works with childcare programs to assess the status of
health, safety, and wellness practices and to establish goals for the technical assistance consultations.
• Provides consultation to answer questions on health and safety issues (in alignment with public health
guidance and healthcare standards) common in childcare, such as:
 Prevention of infectious disease.
 Child growth and development; including caring for children with chronic health
conditions or special needs.
 Child abuse and violence prevention.
 Oral health, maternal health, and access to special services and resources.
• Maintains compliance with applicable policies, laws and regulations.
• Develops and executes a collaborative process for effective consultation to build partnerships with
childcare program providers.

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in nursing or
community health preferred and at least 1 year of experience in clinical or public health nursing; or an
Associate degree in nursing and at least three years of clinical, public health or other related experience
that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
• Must be knowledgeable of local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they apply to public
health nursing.
• Must be knowledgeable of community resources.
• Must be available for off-hour and/or weekend activities and overtime if needed.
• Must have a valid Iowa Driver’s License and be insurable under county guidelines. The position may
require the occasional use of private vehicle for official business.

Salary Range & Benefits:
• $24.28 – $31.46 hourly; starting compensation is based on qualifications.
