Anatomy of Iowa Floods: Preparing for the Future

Planned by the University of Iowa Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research these seminars are designed to help people better understand the 2008 Iowa floods and how Iowa residents, as well as local, regional and state leaders can better plan and prepare for future flooding.
 
Topics to be covered include trends in Iowa precipitation; trends in storm water run-off; work of the Iowa Flood Center; floodplain management strategies; water quality; the Cedar Falls Floodplain Initiative; rural-urban watershed coalition building; and a review of related state public policy issues. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.
 
Following each seminar, refreshments will be served and a limited number of free copies of the book, “A Watershed Year: Anatomy of the Iowa Floods of 2008,” will be available to attendees.
 
The seminars are being hosted by the University of Iowa Center for Global & Regional Environmental Research, Rebuild Iowa Office, Iowa Flood Center, University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa League of Cities and the Iowa State Association of Counties.

2010 HIV, STD and Hepatitis Conference

The Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Department of Education, and the HIV Community Planning Group present the 11th HIV, STD, and Hepatitis Conference: 2010 - A New Decade: A Call for Change.

The conference will feature six general plenary sessions and 24 workshops. At the end of the conference, participants will be able to:

 

• Identify and describe emerging HIV, STD, and hepatitis prevention and care issues;

• Describe the most effective strategies and interventions to help people change the behaviors that put them at risk for HIV, STDs, and hepatitis B and C;

• Describe the benefits of integrating hepatitis and STD services into existing HIV programs;

• Develop and strengthen community partnerships and collaborations;

• Identify current care and treatment options;

• Demonstrate cultural competency in working with at-risk populations in urban and rural settings;

• Shape HIV, STD, and hepatitis prevention, care, and outreach programs to community values and needs; and

• Identify ways to apply theory to practice.

 

This conference is designed for community health planners, community leaders, educators, health department personnel, health professionals, hospital personnel, members of faith communities, nursing professionals, peer educators, persons from community-based organizations, persons living with HIV/AIDS, STD and/or hepatitis, physicians and physician assistants, prevention and care providers, social workers, substance abuse prevention and treatment counselors, teachers, volunteers, and other interested persons.

Asthma Educator Institute

The American Lung Association in Iowa (ALAIA) Asthma Educator Institute is a two-day workshop for individuals wanting to improve their ability to provide asthma education for patients and families with asthma. It is expected that many of these individuals will go on to take the certified asthma educator exam offered by NAECB and become certified asthma educators.
 
Who:   This workshop is designed for nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physicians, and other credentialed professionals that have experience working with patients with asthma.
